Webinar: The Vocabulary of Chronology
Saturday, April 26, 2014
2:00pm ET / 11:00am PT

In teaching history, civics, and other social sciences we use words such as generation, decennial, A D, B C, BCE,CE, and others. I find that many college students don't know the meaning of these words. In the Common Core we help students master non fictional literature. Without rehearsal of the vocabulary of the field current middle school and high school students will be like my college students - unable to penetrate many texts. I have students read the first paragraph of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. "Four score and seven years ago..." Not one student in all my classes knows what Lincoln is talking about. What is a score? Some think it has something to do with bowling. It's time to teach vocabulary.
