This is part one of a four-part webinar series that will focus on ways to incorporate inclusive pedagogical approaches for addressing different faith traditions and cultures in the classroom consistent with the First Amendment. Based on Tanenbaum's Seven Principles of Inclusive Education and Face to Faith's Essentials of Dialogue, these webinars help teachers navigate the often difficult terrain of teaching accurately and sensitively about diverse religions and cultures. While each of the four webinars work cohesively, they also are beneficial as individual sessions.

In this webinar session, we will examine the constitutional and educational framework for addressing religion in public schools.

Key questions addressed include:
  • What are the challenges of teaching about religions in the curriculum?
  • How should educators address religious needs and requirements of students?
  • What are the limits of student religious expression?
Objective: Prepare social studies teachers to address religion and religious diversity in the classroom using the principles of the First Amendment as applied under current law.

Presenter: Charles Haynes, Newseum Institute's Religious Freedom Center
