Description

Webinar Series: Using Multiple Viewpoints and Multiple Perspectives to Study American History
Thursdays, May 7,14, 21 & 28
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EST / 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm PST.

This webinar series will reinforce the advantages of analyzing multiple perspectives and multiple viewpoints when studying American history. Utilizing inquiry activities as suggested by the C3 social studies framework, we will search out multiple (and in some instances conflicting) views of American history so that teachers can encourage critical thinking and informed dialogue among students. We will carefully analyze authors who take a more conventional view of American history and who emphasize "American exceptionalism" (Larry Schweikart), and also discuss more critical views of American history (Howard Zinn's "People's History"; Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick's "Untold History"). We will demonstrate how using multiple viewpoints will allow students to more precisely analyze major events and topics in American history.

During this four-part webinar series we will analyze four major topics in American history:
  • Thursday, May 7: The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb

  • Thursday, May 14: Whose Responsibility was the Cold War?

  • Thursday, May 21: U.S. Footprints Around the World; and

  • Thursday, May 28: Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Race Relations
In each session we will analyze different historical views of each era/event, followed by a discussion by master teachers of how these views could be utilized during inquiry and other classroom activities. Resources will also be provided.

Presenters: Stephen Armstrong, NCSS Past President and Social Studies Consultant, Connecticut Department of Education, Social Studies Consultant, Hartford, CT; Eric S. Singer, M.Ed., Ph.D., Principal Researcher and Curriculum Outreach Coordinator, Untold History of the United States, Washington, DC; and special guests.
