Discuss the implementation of unit planning and development of a C3 unit while connecting historical thinking strategies with literacy strategies. Using the C3 Framework, this presentation will illustrate how teachers can create a C3 unit that incorporates social studies, literacy, inquiry, with an overarching focus on history and civic learning similar to the elementary C3 unit developed by the presenter for her own class.

We will develop compelling and supporting questions for a unit, integrate primary sources within each supporting question, highlight trade books that connect to the primary sources, promotie the use of the close reading strategy, and use student data within a PLC to determine next steps in student learning.

Consider the compelling Question: How do people overcome hardships and become American citizens who exemplify the American Spirit? Supporting Questions: What was slavery? Why was our country divided during the Civil War? How were African Americans oppressed after the Civil War? In what ways were African Americans oppressed after the Civil War? How did they overcome the oppression? In what ways did African Americans stand up against oppression?

Explicit planning, work samples, video clips, and a PLC collaboration video will be highlighted.

Presenter: Kimberly Heckart is a current NCSS board member and a certified PreK-6 teacher. She has earned a BS in Elementary Education with an Early Childhood, and later acquiring Reading, Endorsements from Truman State University, then attained her Master's Degree from Viterbo University in 2004. Additionally, in 2007, she was awarded Outstanding Elementary School Teacher of the Year by NCSS, as well as Iowa Department of Education's History Teacher of the Year.
