During an election year, Americans are bombarded by various messages and images from candidates. In this webinar, participants will learn a new framework for interpreting political media through the lens of shared American values and the inherent tensions that exist between them. Participants will emerge equipped with a method for guiding students to understand political rhetoric from the election of 1800 to the modern day.

Presenter

Kelly Govainis the Senior Coordinator for Teacher Development. Kelly coordinates our Teacher Institute weeks during the summer and develops programs for middle and high school teachers based on The Idea of America framework. She also organizes and maintains the current Master Teacher Ambassador program representing teachers nationwide. She holds a BA in Anthropology and a M. Ed in Social Studies Education from Rutgers University. From 2006-2010, she was a training specialist for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and developed courses for historic area interpretive staff in the areas of material culture and interpreting to families and children while working part-time at Historic Jamestowne. She started her education career as a social studies teacher in Somerville, New Jersey. She also spent a year working in education programming at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge and has been an adjunct professor in the School of Education at the College of William and Mary.
