What has you and your students stumped this election season? Are you adrift in the social media swirl, or aghast at the ugly ads? Still baffled by how the primaries played out, or concerned your vote may not count come November? Join NewseumED educators to start untangling the stickiest issues of an unprecedented presidential election. Explore how you can use an inquiry-based approach and artifacts from the Newseum's collection to unearth answers to pressing questions about campaign fundamentals, connect current events to historical milestones and creatively critique our political processes. Participants will learn how they can use NewseumED's free election resources -- including primary sources and tools for organizing evidence and developing arguments -- to facilitate classroom investigation and debate of election mechanics, the candidates' messages and the varying forms of public participation in the digital age.

Presenters

Anna Kassinger is the Newseum's multimedia curriculum specialist. After earning a bachelor's degree in Latin American studies from Pomona College and a master's degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Anna returned to her native D.C. to teach. At the Hirshhorn Museum, she helped start ARTLAB+, the Smithsonian's first digital media studio for teens. Now Anna channels her passion for civic education and storytelling into development of on-site and online curriculum for students and teachers.

Kirsti Kenneth graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale College, where she studied children's culture and education. She spent several years in Boston with the PBS documentary series FRONTLINE before moving to Washington, D.C. In 2008 she began teaching classes at the Newseum and in 2010 became the Newseum's curriculum developer. She creates classes and resources for students and educators focused on media literacy, the First Amendment, journalism and news as the first draft of history.
