Register Online

Details

July 22, 2013through July 26, 2013
Brandman University
Monterey, CA

Advance Registration Deadline: June 22, 2013

Description

Powerful and Authentic Social Studies (PASS) is a professional development program that trains social studies teachers in curriculum design, assessment, and instruction in a standards-based environment. This institute will provide participants with the materials and expertise necessary to lead their own PASS training workshops in their schools and school districts. Participants will learn about PASS criteria and standards for curriculum design, assessment construction, and effective instruction. In small learning communities, participants will examine videotaped K-12 vignettes of teaching and create examples of curriculum units and assessment tasks to share with their learning community.

PASS is an effective means of training pre-service, as well as in-service, teachers. This institute will interest NCSS members at all educational levels. Join us at Brandman University in historic Monterey, CA, which is a world renowned destination with the Aquarium, Carmel, Pebble Beach Golf Course, and Award wining wineries among some of the attractions.

Course Goals

  • Constructive Argumentation: Students will utilize the tools inherent to constructive argumentation when participating in course discussions to promote a deeper understanding of the issues that impact discipline-based inquiry and social studies education.
  • Active Participation: Students will participate in group discussions on a regular basis.
  • Personal Reflection & Growth: Students will gain insight and understanding into who they are as individuals and how individual beliefs and values impact instructional design, especially in social studies education.
  • Cooperative Learning: Students will have the opportunity to use technology standards and tools and incorporate information gained from the course.

Joseph A. Braun, Jr. serves as the coordinator of professional development for NCSS and is professor emeritus of Social Studies Education at Illinois State University. He is also a past member of the NCSS Board of Directors.
