Webinar: An Issue-Centered Approach to Classroom Debate & Deliberation
Tuesday, April 9, 2019
7:00pm ET / 4:00pm PT

This session will introduce a variety of techniques and activities for immediate use in the classroom. Explore approaches to contemporary controversies incorporating multiple viewpoints which shift the focus of classroom discussions away from personal politics and instead emphasize policy, values, and debate. Participants will examine several approaches to discussion, take part in a model lesson component centered on longstanding democratic values, and practice adapting current headlines to meaningful issues that enhance their existing curricula and provide students with rich context. The goal of the session is for participants to leave equipped with practical tools for teaching contemporary issues, including debate and deliberation structures, an understanding of democratic values that support reasoned discourse, and methods for fostering a climate of thoughtful engagement between students.
