Tour the memorial and museum and hear a presentation from the keynote speaker, Dr. Roger Harris. Dr. Harris, featured on the documentary "The Vietnam War," is now a distinguished educator and a clinical assistant professor at Boston University. He served three years with the U.S. Marine Corps and and spent 13 months fighting in the war in Vietnam. After Vietnam, he returned to Boston and began teaching in the public school system. The National Council for the Social Studies serves as the Specialty Professional Association charged with providing social studies programs with reviews that can lead to National Recognition status. The NCSS SPA Report Preparer Clinic is a full-day workshop that is intended to provide support to social studies faculty and program coordinators responsible for preparing NCSS/CAEP SPA reports. NCSS program report preparer training based on the 2017 National Standards for the Preparation of Social Studies Teachers will help you to: Understand the NCSS program review process Navigate and interpret report template directions and submission requirements Understand assessment requirements/guidelines, rubric/scoring guide expectations, and data requirements Learn how to access and apply available resources Learn how reports are reviewed and recognition decisions are made NCSS's Social Studies teacher preparation program recognition standards and the SPA review process can lead to National Recognition for social studies teacher preparation programs. This recognition can be used to support institutions seeking accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). National Recognition by NCSS for a social studies teacher preparation program supports the institutional CAEP Accreditation process with evidence that can be used as a resource in building a case for CAEP Standard 1 - content and pedagogical knowledge - and candidates' ability to apply it. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops, program assessments, and previous reports. |

This interactive workshop will focus on a comparative analysis of the Founding Principles of America and Citizenship Rights of African Americans in late 18th and early 19th Century Philadelphia. Using the C3 Framework (the core disciplines of Civics, History, Geography, and Economics), this clinic is designed to assist teachers in their ability to illuminate the late 18th and early 19th Century historical battles between the American ideal set forth in the Declaration of Independence that we are all created equal and the harsh reality of racism that continues to have an impact upon our American society. The intention is to help teachers expand students' understanding of the key events and people that defined the struggle between the schism of slavery and 2nd class citizenry versus the principles of democracy. By placing this clinic in the very place where the actual documents of freedom and equality were forged, participants will actively engage with the historical sites and archival and educational material that will assist them in approaching our shared U.S. history from new entry points. The clinic will be lead by Philadelphia historian Melvin Garrison, who recently retired from the Philadelphia School District as curriculum administrator and expert in African American history; Alex Palma, Assistant Director and archivist of Carpenters' Hall (the home of the First Continental Congress); Cynthia MacLeod, Superintendent of Independence National Historical Park; and Francine Gold, educator, and recipient of the inaugural David McCullough award and several National History Day teaching awards. Host: Battleship New Jersey, 62 Battleship Place, Camden, NJ Participants in the pre-conference clinic will actively engage in the activities and instructional materials that have been developed in collaboration with the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation to honor the sacrifices made by service personnel during the Korean War. To commemorate the opening of the new Wall of Remembrance at the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C. the Korean War Legacy foundation published a new curriculum book, Honoring Sacrifice. Teachers will learn about lessons aligned to academic disciplines of Literature, History, Geography, Art, and STEM-H. This interactive session allows teachers to use and consider how they might adapt materials for the specific populations they teach. Specific attention is given to the process that is followed to identify MIAs through forensic science and historical research. The concept of sacrifice is also analyzed through primary sources and the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.. This collection of instructional materials provides guidance for teachers of social studies as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary learning. Participants who complete the clinic will receive a $400 incentive which will be paid by check at the conclusion of the session. This is a great way to defray some of your travel expenses. This clinic is generously supported by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs of the Republic of Korea. NOTE: Participants are responsible for travel from the conference site to the USS New Jersey (15 minute car ride). |
