Description

Participants will discover untold narratives of African Americans and women from diverse racial backgrounds during the 19th century. In particular, they will explore connections between the Declaration of Independence and fights for freedom and justice by engaging in close readings of narratives of enslavement, the Seneca Falls Declaration (1848), and Douglass's Fourth of July Speech (1852). The webinar will introduce educators to the co-processing strategy to support classroom conversations about complex histories, including enslavement and gender bias. Educators will be introduced to the Democratic Knowledge Project's high-quality, open source curriculum, Expanding Liberty And Equality: Agency, Abolition, And Suffrage, to explore these histories and pedagogies.
